๐

A day at the beach is magic โ the sun, the sand, the waves. But bringing your dog or cat along requires more planning than you'd think. Between hot sand, salt water, and curious wildlife, there's a lot to watch out for.
Here's how to make beach days safe and fun for everyone โ paws included.
โ
Before You Go
- Check the beach rules: Not all beaches allow pets, and many have seasonal restrictions
- Check the weather: Avoid midday sun โ early morning or late afternoon is best
- Check the tides: Low tide gives you more room and calmer water
- Vaccinations: Make sure they're up to date, especially for parvo
- Flea & tick treatment: Beach grass and sand carry both
๐ What to Pack
- ๐ง Fresh water + collapsible bowl
- โ๏ธ Beach umbrella or shade tent
- ๐งด Pet-safe sunscreen (yes, really!)
- ๐ฆฎ Leash + harness
- ๐งบ Towel or blanket
- ๐ฉ Poop bags (always!)
- ๐ Treats + a few toys
- ๐ฉน Basic first-aid kit
- ๐ Proof of vaccination (some beaches check)
๐ Dogs at the Beach
Do:
- Keep them on a leash near other people
- Let them paddle โ but not drink the salt water
- Rinse them off after swimming
- Give them shade breaks every 20โ30 minutes
- Watch for signs of overheating
Don't:
- Let them drink seawater (causes vomiting and dehydration)
- Let them chase seabirds
- Let them dig unsupervised (broken glass, sharp shells)
- Leave them in the car โ ever
- Let them off-leash in busy areas
๐ฑ Cats at the Beach (Yes, Really!)
Some cats love the beach โ but it's rare. If you're trying it:
- Start with short visits
- Keep them in a carrier or on a harness
- Never let them off-leash
- Watch for stress signals (flattened ears, tucked tail, panting)
- Bring familiar items โ blanket, toy
Most cats are happier at home. If yours hates it, don't force it. ๐พ
๐ฅ Hot Sand & Hot Pavement
Sand and pavement can hit 60ยฐC+ in the sun. That's enough to burn paw pads in seconds.
- The 7-second rule: Place the back of your hand on the ground for 7 seconds โ if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for them
- Walk on wet sand near the water
- Bring a mat or towel for them to lie on
- Consider pet booties for sensitive paws
๐ Salt Water & Swimming
- Salt water is dangerous if swallowed โ can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, and dehydration
- Bring fresh water for drinking
- Rinse them thoroughly after swimming
- Watch for strong currents and rip tides
- Never let them swim unsupervised
- Consider a pet life jacket if they're not strong swimmers
โ๏ธ Heat & Sun Safety
- Signs of overheating: Heavy panting, drooling, weakness, bright red gums
- Give water every 15โ20 minutes
- Shade breaks are non-negotiable
- Light-coloured pets can get sunburnt โ use pet-safe sunscreen on nose and ears
- If they show signs of heatstroke, cool them down slowly and get to a vet
๐ Watch Out For
- Sharp shells and glass โ check paws regularly
- Jellyfish โ dangerous if eaten or touched
- Crabs and sharp rocks โ curious noses get pinched
- Dead fish or birds โ don't let them roll in it ๐ฅด
- Seaweed piles โ can hide sharp objects
๐๏ธ Beach Etiquette
- Not everyone loves dogs โ respect other beachgoers
- Don't let your pet approach strangers without asking
- Clean up after them โ every time
- Stay away from children's play areas and picnic spots
- Keep noise low โ barks carry far
๐ After the Beach
- Rinse them thoroughly โ salt and sand irritate skin
- Check paws for cuts, sand, or burns
- Dry ears โ moisture causes infections
- Fresh water and a nap โ beach days are exhausting!
- Check for ticks โ beach grass is a favourite hiding spot
